Medea at Epidaurus
The Greek National Opera gives Cherubini's Medea a single night at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on 20 June 2026 — sixty-five years after Maria Callas sang the role there, in a staging rebuilt from the 1961 production of Alexis Minotis and Yannis Tsarouchis.
Medea at Epidaurus is a single-night performance by the Greek National Opera of Cherubini’s Medea at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on Saturday 20 June 2026. The staging is a reconstruction of the 1961 production directed by Alexis Minotis, with sets and costumes by Yannis Tsarouchis, in which Maria Callas sang the title role — sixty-five years prior.
The director Panaghis Pagoulatos worked from Minotis’s surviving directing notebooks, Tsarouchis’s original designs and the photographic record of the 1961 performances to reconstruct the production. Jacques Lacombe conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Greek National Opera. The title role is sung by Anna Pirozzi, the Italian dramatic soprano, with Jean-François Borras as Jason, Tassis Christoyannis as Creon, Alisa Kolosova as Neris and Danae Kontora as Glauce.
The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is a fourth-century BC theatre in the sanctuary of Asclepius in the Argolid. The Athens & Epidaurus Festival’s programme of ancient drama opens in July; this single opera performance is scheduled before that season. Tickets were released at the start of February 2026.
