The August Full Moon at the Archaeological Sites

The August Full Moon is the Hellenic Ministry of Culture's annual nocturnal opening of archaeological sites and museums across Greece, held on the night of the full moon — 28 August in 2026. Sites admit the public without charge until midnight.

The August Full Moon is the Hellenic Ministry of Culture’s annual nocturnal opening of archaeological sites, museums and monuments across Greece, coordinated by the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage. It falls on 28 August in 2026. The Ministry has observed the practice since 1996; sites admit the public without charge until midnight.

The 2025 edition opened 114 sites and museums across the country, 71 with programmed evenings. Events included concerts, theatre performances, stargazing, and mythology readings at sites from Delphi and Dodona to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Gates customarily open at eight o’clock, with events spread across the days around the full moon rather than a single night.

The Ministry publishes the per-site programme in the weeks before the full moon.
