A Winter Recital at the Niarchos Centre

A Winter Recital at the Niarchos Centre is a recital in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre's January programme in Kallithea. The SNFCC houses the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece in a Renzo Piano–designed complex completed in 2016.

A Winter Recital at the Niarchos Centre is a recital in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre’s winter programme, held in Kallithea on Faliron Bay. The SNFCC was completed in 2016 to a design by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. It was funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation at a cost of 630 million euros and is the first cultural project in Greece to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

The complex houses two national institutions. The Greek National Opera occupies the eastern wing, with the principal Stavros Niarchos Hall (1,400 seats, fan-shaped, walnut-clad, acoustic design by Müller-BBM of Munich) and the Alternative Stage (450 seats). The National Library of Greece, founded in 1832 and previously housed in the neoclassical Hansen building on Panepistimiou, occupies the western wing. The photovoltaic canopy, a 10,000-square-metre roof on a single concrete column, supplies more than half the building’s energy load. The 21-hectare park, designed by Deborah Nevins, runs from Syngrou Avenue to the seafront canal.

The winter recital cycle takes place on the Alternative Stage in January. The opera’s main season runs on the Stavros Niarchos Hall across Friday and Sunday evenings, with programmes including Verdi, Wagner, Greek-language works by Manolis Kalomiris, and contemporary commissions.
