International Xinomavro Day is an annual occasion held on 1 November, established in 2019 by the Association of Winemakers “Wines of North Greece” to mark the close of the northern harvest. The first of November was chosen to reflect the association’s designation of Xinomavro as the leading variety in the northern vineyard.
Xinomavro — meaning “sour-black” in literal translation — stands behind four appellations of origin: Naoussa and Amyndeon on the Macedonian uplands, Goumenissa, and Rapsani on the lower slopes of Mount Olympus. Its reds are customarily released at two years of age or more and structured for extended bottle ageing.
The association invites wine bars, restaurants and wineries to mount tastings and events for the variety. The occasion is observed in Thessaloniki, in the cellars of Naoussa, and wherever the variety reaches.
