The Dead Man and the Resurrection
The Dead Man and the Resurrection is a contemporary opera by Nicolas Tzortzis, after the novel by Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis, premiered by the Greek National Opera on its Alternative Stage at the SNFCC across six performances in March 2025.
The Dead Man and the Resurrection is a contemporary opera by the composer Nicolas Tzortzis, based on the novel by the Thessalonian writer Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis, directed by Anastasia Koumidou. The Greek National Opera gave its premiere on the Alternative Stage at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, running six performances across March 2025 — on the 14th, 15th and 16th, and again on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd.
The Alternative Stage is the GNO’s studio theatre, the smaller below-ground house at the SNFCC given to new opera, music theatre, and experimental work. The Greek National Opera was founded in 1939 and moved to the Renzo Piano-designed cultural centre in 2017. Pentzikis’s novel is known for its interior, liturgically inflected prose; the opera is one of several commissions the Alternative Stage has made from contemporary Greek composers since the company’s move to the SNFCC.
