The Greek National Opera opens its 2026/27 season on 30 October 2026 with Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, a staging by the South African artist William Kentridge. L’Orfeo, composed by Claudio Monteverdi in 1607, is among the earliest works in the operatic repertoire. The production is an international co-production with the Glyndebourne Festival and the Metropolitan Opera of New York.

The performances are given at the Stavros Niarchos Hall, the company’s home since 2017 within the Renzo Piano cultural centre on the Athenian coast. The artistic director is Giorgos Koumendakis. Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades follows in December 2026 in a new production by Stephen Langridge, conducted by Dmitri Jurowski.
