I Want to See the Pope! is a production of Theophrastos Sakellaridis’s 1920 operetta, staged by the Greek National Opera on its Alternative Stage at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre for nine performances from 31 January to 16 February 2025. The work is Sakellaridis’s adaptation of Maurice Hennequin’s farce Les joies du foyer and is among the founding works of the Greek operetta tradition, which flourished in Athens in the early decades of the twentieth century.
The production was conducted by Nicolas Vassiliou and directed by Natasha Triantafylli. Two performances, on 9 and 15 February, were given as fully accessible performances for guests with sensory impairments. The Alternative Stage is the smaller experimental house of the Greek National Opera, set below the principal Stavros Niarchos Hall within the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Kallithea, where the company has been resident since 2017.
