Europa's Pledge

Europa’s Pledge is a world-premiere work written and directed by Wajdi Mouawad, staged at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on 1 and 2 August 2025. A co-production of the Athens Epidaurus Festival and the Théâtre national de la Colline in Paris, it was commissioned for the festival’s Contemporary Ancients cycle and performed in multiple languages, drawing on figures from ancient tragedy.

The principal cast was led by Juliette Binoche; the Stavros Niarchos Foundation served as lead donor. The performances belonged to the festival’s seventieth anniversary season, which ran from late June through 23 August 2025 and presented more than a hundred productions. The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is a fourth-century BC limestone theatre whose acoustic carries an unamplified voice to the last row of the cavea.
