Utopia at Epidaurus
Teodor Currentzis conducted his orchestra Utopia at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus on 19 July 2025 in a programme of Mahler, presented by the Athens Epidaurus Festival in its seventieth year.
Utopia at Epidaurus was an orchestral concert presented by Teodor Currentzis and his ensemble Utopia at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus on 19 July 2025, part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival’s seventieth anniversary programme. The programme paired Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with the song cycle “Kindertotenlieder” (Songs on the Death of Children, composed 1901–1904). The soprano Regula Mühlemann performed in the symphony’s final movement and the mezzo-soprano Eve-Maud Hubeaux performed the cycle.
Utopia is an independent ensemble founded by Currentzis in 2022, drawn from soloists across Europe. Currentzis, who was born in Athens, leads Utopia alongside his musicAeterna choir and orchestra. The ancient theatre of Epidaurus, a fourth-century BC structure in the Argolid, is known for a limestone acoustic that carries an unamplified voice to the highest tier; its programme is held primarily for ancient drama, and orchestral concerts there are rare.
