Houses that keep no public name

Residences

A considered set of houses across Santorini, Mykonos, the Peloponnese, and the lesser-visited islands. They are owned by people the house knows by name, kept off the wider rental market, and staffed to a standard that survives close inspection. The house is half of it. The rest is the cook, the housekeeper, the nanny and the driver — each vetted, matched to the household and answerable to you — and the manager who opens the house in April and closes it in October.

By sea, and by air

Passages

Motor yachts, sailing vessels, classic gulets — and the aircraft that meets them. The boats are the easy part. The crews matter more, and ours know which coves go quiet by mid-morning, which tavernas to telephone ahead, and where to anchor on the Saturday of the festival. Between islands the passage is a helicopter, a seaplane, or a car waiting where the tender lands.

A wedding on a headland at sunset. A reception laid beneath olive trees older than the house behind them. A christening, a name day, a fortieth anniversary, an island taken for the evening. None of these are catalogue items: the day is built around the people in it, and the thousand small things are settled until it seems that nothing was.
