The Vergos Spring Rare Books Sale

Vergos Auctions' spring sale of rare books, manuscripts, documents and engravings was held across two evenings at the Parnassos Literary Society on 29 and 30 April 2026 — a two-part catalogue led by autograph poems of George Seferis and a philhellenic pair printed for the bicentenary of the Exodus of Missolonghi.

The Vergos Spring Rare Books Sale is Vergos Auctions’ annual spring auction of Rare Books, Manuscripts, Documents and Engravings. The 2026 edition was held across two evenings at the Parnassos Literary Society on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 April, each session opening at half past five. It is the spring half of the house’s twice-yearly book calendar; the autumn sale falls in early November, and the December auction of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Greek painting and sculpture is the fixture around which the house’s year turns.

The 2026 catalogue was set in two parts. The first carried rare books, manuscripts, documents, photographs, posters and engravings of historical interest; the second was given entirely to the travel and history library of the physician and bibliographer Athanasios D. Hatzidimos (1910–1967). Named lots included five autograph poems from George Seferis’s Calligraphies of 1941–1942, a pair of philhellenic publications inspired by the Exodus of Missolonghi and printed for the bicentenary of that episode of the Greek Revolution, the album New York Easter Parade of nineteen photographs taken by Nelly’s in 1953 — each numbered, signed and dated — and The Olympic Hymn, one of fifty numbered copies illustrated by Alekos Fassianos to verses by Kostis Palamas. The same fixture had fallen on 29 and 30 April the spring before, the two editions holding the late-April window in succession.
