The Vergos Spring Rare Books Sale

Vergos Auctions' spring sale of rare books, manuscripts, documents and engravings is expected in late April 2027 — the two-evening Athens fixture whose 2026 edition brought a two-part catalogue to the Parnassos Literary Society, from autograph poems of George Seferis to a philhellenic pair printed for the bicentenary of the Exodus of Missolonghi.

The Vergos Spring Rare Books Sale is Vergos Auctions’ annual spring auction of Rare Books, Manuscripts, Documents and Engravings. The 2027 edition is expected in late April; the fixture has held the same window across consecutive editions, the 2025 and 2026 sales each falling on 29 and 30 April at the Parnassos Literary Society, each evening opening at half past five. It is the spring half of the house’s twice-yearly book calendar, with the autumn sale falling in early November and the December auction of Greek painting and sculpture being the fixture around which the house’s year turns.

The catalogue runs to two parts: the first of rare books, manuscripts, documents, photographs and engravings of historical interest; the second, in the most recent editions, given over to a single named library — in 2026 the travel and history collection of the physician and bibliographer Athanasios D. Hatzidimos (1910–1967). The spring sales have carried working papers of the modern Greek canon and documents of the nation’s making: five autograph poems from George Seferis’s Calligraphies of 1941–1942, a pair of philhellenic publications printed for the bicentenary of the Exodus of Missolonghi, and the album New York Easter Parade of nineteen signed photographs taken by Nelly’s in 1953 all passed through the 2026 room. Founded in 1989, Vergos is the largest and longest-running auction house in Greece. The house confirms the exact dates on its own calendar in the weeks before the sale.
