The Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival
The 29th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival is scheduled for early March 2027 at the Olympion on Aristotelous Square and the port warehouses of Thessaloniki, organised by the Thessaloniki Film Festival.
The Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival is the documentary spring counterpart to Thessaloniki’s November fiction festival, organised by the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Founded in 1999 by Dimitri Eipides under the subtitle “Images of the 21st Century”, it is held in early March in the northern capital. The 29th edition is scheduled for early March 2027.
The festival is held at the Olympion on Aristotelous Square, the building whose two theatres — the Olympion and the Pavlos Zannas — face down the square towards the Thermaic Gulf, with the programme extended to the restored port warehouses, where the screening rooms are named for filmmakers: Frida Liappa, Tonia Marketaki, John Cassavetes, Stavros Tornes. Competition runs under the Golden Alexander, the festival’s principal award.
The 27th edition ran 6 to 16 March 2025 and the 28th edition ran 5 to 15 March 2026, the latter screening 252 documentaries among them eighty world premieres.
