The Miaoulia of Hydra

The Municipality of Hydra's annual commemoration of Andreas Miaoulis — the admiral born on the island in 1769 who made the fireship the decisive weapon of the Greek War of Independence — is held across 26–28 June 2026, 191 years after his death, culminating with the burning of an Ottoman flagship replica at the harbour mouth.

The Miaoulia of Hydra is an annual festival organised by the Municipality of Hydra to commemorate Andreas Miaoulis, the admiral born on the island in 1769 who commanded the revolutionary fleet through the Greek War of Independence and made the fireship its decisive naval weapon. The 2026 edition is held across the weekend of 26–28 June, 191 years after his death. The programme includes exhibitions, lectures, concerts, and theatre arranged through the town by the Municipality.

The main event is held on the evening of 27 June at the harbour mouth: a re-enactment of the Battle of Gerontas in which a replica of the Ottoman flagship is set alight on the water and fireworks are set off above it. Earlier in the day the Mayor and the Municipal Council receive representatives of the Greek government and the Hellenic Navy at City Hall.

The DESTE Foundation unveils its annual summer commission at the former slaughterhouse on Hydra during the same period. Hydra does not permit motorised vehicles; the harbour spectacle is viewed from the stone quays surrounding the port.
