Athens Marathon. The Authentic

Athens Marathon. The Authentic is the Hellenic Athletics Federation’s annual marathon raced over the original course from the town of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium — 42.195 kilometres finishing in the marble stadium that staged the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The course traces the legendary route of the messenger Pheidippides after the battle of Marathon in 490 BC.

The 42nd edition was held on Sunday 9 November 2025 and set a participation record of 19,105 finishers over the classic distance. More than seventy thousand runners participated across the accompanying 10-kilometre, 5-kilometre and children’s races held over the weekend. The marathon starts at 09:00, with the field climbing to the thirty-first kilometre before the descent into the city.
