Metallica at the OAKA Olympic Stadium
Metallica opened the 2026 leg of the M72 World Tour at the Athens Olympic Stadium on Saturday 9 May 2026, before more than 90,000 people.
Metallica at the OAKA Olympic Stadium was a single stadium concert given by the American band on Saturday 9 May 2026, as part of the M72 World Tour. It was the first show of the tour’s 2026 leg, and the band’s first concert in Greece for 16 years. Knocked Loose and Gojira opened the evening.
The band reported more than 90,000 people in the stadium, a new attendance record for the venue, and the promoter High Priority called it the largest concert ever held in Greece. The M72 stage stood in the centre of the stadium and was built for viewing from 360 degrees, a format shown in Greece for the first time. It was Metallica’s fifth concert in Athens: the first was on 27 June 1993 and the previous one on 24 June 2010.
The set opened with “Creeping Death” and closed with “Enter Sandman”. During their duet spot, the bassist Robert Trujillo and the guitarist Kirk Hammett played the “Zorba” theme by Mikis Theodorakis and “Den Choras Pouthena” by the Greek rock band Trypes.
