Kyrimai Hotel stands at Gerolimenas old port, Deep Mani, Peloponnese, a few kilometres from Cape Tainaron, where the Ionian Sea meets the Aegean. It is a trading complex from 1870: store, residence, warehouse and tower, restored by the Kyrimis family, Aris and Alexandros Kyrimis, who still run it. Its stone walls carry more than 150 years of history.
The restoration kept stone and wood, and with them the proportions and the masonry of the original buildings. The old wine store is now the reception, its stone arch and antique safe still in place. Beside it, the former wood store holds the books, handwritten records and trading documents that the work turned up. Stairways, arches and inner courtyards climb from the water’s edge. Alexander Kyrimis, who converted the tower and built the hotel with his brother, manages Kyrimai in person.
The port that built it
In the 1870s Michael Katsimantis, a trader from Syros, and Theodore Kyrimis, trader and mayor of Middle Mani, helped turn Gerolimenas into a trading point that connected Mani with Ermoupolis, Piraeus and the markets of the Mediterranean. Maniot produce and craftwork left this southern edge of the Peloponnese by sea. Gerolimenas was the most important trading post in the southern Peloponnese and the last safe bay before the Corinth canal. Trade fell away from the 1950s, and the compound that had served it stayed where it was.
The rooms
The inventory is 23, including four suites. The two largest are the Master Suite and two-level suite, 60sqm each. The Master Suite sits almost above the water, with five large windows and a small balcony facing the open sea and the silhouette of Cavo Grosso rock. The two-level suite is the most independent room in the hotel: two floors, two balconies, two bathrooms and space for four guests.
Two rooms carry the family’s own history. The tower stands at the centre of the complex, 27sqm, and in the 1870s it marked the family’s power and status; it now looks across Gerolimenas bay, the village and the open sea. One of the superior rooms, 25sqm and opening south toward the distant Cape Tainaron, was the Kyrimis family’s living room around 1875.
The superior sea view rooms, also 25sqm, are doubles sharing a wide veranda with private sitting areas. Between them are the two-level rooms at 24sqm, with a sitting area below and a bed in the loft above, and the Premier room in the courtyard, inside a restored range of 19th-century warehouses. The classic rooms sit around the inner courtyard, near the old cistern and the former warehouse area: 16sqm, and 15sqm for the classic single.
The table
Lunch is built on the sofra, the old Maniot table of small shared dishes that brought families and friends together. It is cooked in an outdoor kitchen around a wood-fired oven, so the preparation and the conversation around it happen in the open. Breakfast comes to the table in courses, with coffee, fresh-squeezed juice, hand-made pies and hand-picked fruit. Ingredients are seasonal, and the kitchen buys from small producers and farms in Mani.
Out from the door
The season runs April to October. Kyrimai works with Mani Water Sports on hiking trails, boat trips, sea kayak trips, electric bike trips and guided diving.
Gerolimenas lies on the same latitude as southern Sicily and the Straits of Gibraltar. Vatheia, whose stone towers stand in formation along the hillside, is nearby, as is Porto Kagio, the southernmost natural port in Mani and known since Homeric times. Cape Tainaron is the southernmost point of continental Greece and was held in antiquity to be an entrance to Hades; beside it at Paliros there is a ruined temple of Poseidon and a tavern for a long lunch. Monemvasia, with its inhabited Byzantine castle, is a two-hour drive. Mystras, with the ruins of a 13th-century city on the east side of Mount Taygetos, and Gytheion, the foremost port of the Laconian Gulf, are both in Laconia.
Who is this for
Travellers who want the far end of Mani itself, and the trade’s own stone buildings to sleep in. The Loft Suite is a whole level with a small stone balcony over Gerolimenas, the Junior Suite sits at the highest point of the hotel with Cavo Grosso rock ahead, and the superior courtyard rooms take families of three. Days go to Diros Cave, the pebbles at Almyros, the harbour at Limeni and the century-old churches of Areopolis, with Marmari’s beaches and the small bay at Kapi on the same coast.
