Grand Hotel Kalamata stands at Navarinou 37, Kalamata 241 00, at the front of the city’s historic port, five minutes from the centre and from the beaches. Kalamata is the capital and main port of Messenia, and the Hotel America operated on this same ground from 1929. The house that stands there now keeps that footprint on the quay.
The interiors are drawn in variegated marble, and the house holds 23: 10 rooms and 13 suites. They run from 20 to 50 sq m, soundproofed, with sea or city views, air conditioning, a coffee machine, dimmer lighting, robes and slippers, and Salvatore Ferragamo and Ex Voto bath amenities. Room service answers around the clock.
The spa and the rooftop
Do Not Disturb, opened July 2026, has a wing of the hotel to itself. It holds three rooms: a pool, a steam room and a sauna in espresso wood under amber light. The treatments are slow and the rooms are kept dark. The facials rest on Anne Semonin, the Paris skincare house in residence there, and each one includes that house’s signature massage. The spa is open daily, 10am to 8pm.
The rooftop bar is Grand Sky, Thursday to Sunday, by reservation, from 7.30pm to 12.30am. It stands above the port and looks across the Messinian Gulf to the slopes of Mount Taygetus. A smart-elegant dress code applies, and beachwear, flip-flops and sportswear are turned away. The kitchen sends contemporary Mediterranean plates and small dishes, the list holds Greek wines, and the cocktails were made for the roof. A group can take the whole terrace for a celebration or a small conference. Weather can close it, so the house asks you to call before you come.
The table
Dining is Grand Bistro, with Grand Cafe and Grand Bar. Grand Bistro is à la carte, Greek cooking crossed with international dishes, on ingredients bought locally and on ILIADA Kalamata PDO extra virgin olive oil. That oil is pressed from Koroneiki olives, picked by hand between November and January on the slopes of the Taygetus mountains east of the city, and cold pressed mainly in the traditional way. Grand Cafe sits by the sea for speciality coffee, breakfast and small dishes, with the ships going past. Grand Bar pours wines from Greece and abroad, classic drinks, cocktails and mocktails.
Around the house
The Grand Boutique in the lobby sells soy candles in natural wax and diffusers in hand-blown glass, made with CHOE to the scents of the Messinian peninsula: olive blossom from the groves around Kalamata, and summer figs. ILIADA gift boxes are there as well, and paintings by the Greek artist Victoria hang on the upper floors and can be bought through reception.
A private library holds anthologies of local architecture, Byzantine art and regional tradition, alongside ancient philosophers and contemporary writers, in English, Italian, French and other languages.
The house takes business too. There is a 45 sq m conference room for up to 45, with wifi, a 65-inch screen and a data projector, and a 55 sq m room beside it for coffee and lunch breaks. The car park has a charging station for electric cars, for guests, paid by card at the point.
Who is this for
Anyone who wants Messenia from its capital rather than a resort beyond it, and anyone here for work who would rather keep the port in view. The front desk arranges visits to the olive groves of the region and tastings of the oil, private degustations for five people or more, and a boat for a day along the quieter beaches. The mood is city-side and unhurried: a dark room in the afternoon, then the gulf laid out from the roof after dark.
