Canto General
Canto General was performed at the Megaron on 16 and 17 February 2025, in the Alexandra Trianti Hall, as the opening concert of the centenary year of Mikis Theodorakis (born 1925).
Canto General is a musical setting by Mikis Theodorakis of excerpts from Pablo Neruda’s epic poem of the same name. The work was performed at the Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall, on 16 and 17 February 2025, in the Alexandra Trianti Hall, as the opening concert of the centenary year marking the birth of Theodorakis in 1925.
Maria Farantouri, the contralto associated with Theodorakis’s music for sixty years, sang the cycle with the baritone Tasis Christogiannopoulos under the direction of Miltos Logiadis, in the composer’s own orchestration. The Megaron has been the Athens Concert Hall on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue since 1991; the Alexandra Trianti Hall is the company’s venue for staged and large-choral work.
