NEON City Project 2025

The NEON City Project 2025 is a public outdoor commission by the Greek artist Alexandros Tzannis, titled Athens Dies in Dreams at Sunrise, installed in the disused quarry on Philopappos Hill, Athens, from 25 November to 21 December 2025.

The NEON City Project 2025 is an annual public commission by NEON, the contemporary-art organisation founded in Athens in 2013 by the collector Dimitris Daskalopoulos. Since 2014, NEON has commissioned a Greek artist each year to create a new work for a public or historical site in Athens, presented without admission charge. The 2025 commission was given to the Greek artist Alexandros Tzannis and was installed in the disused quarry on the southern slope of Philopappos Hill from 25 November to 21 December 2025.

The work, titled Athens Dies in Dreams at Sunrise, is a sculpture whose base encloses sunken sweatshirts, referencing the rave culture of the 1990s, when parties were held in the same quarry. It is curated by Galini Noti and designed to be viewed at night, when electric lighting both reveals and conceals it. The quarry sits within the archaeological landscape of the western Acropolis hills, on the hill of Philopappos.
